Making Workshop for raku firing

This is Part One of a Two Part course. You need to book BOTH sessions separately.

In this class we will make several pieces which I will then bisque fire.  You will return the following week to glaze and take part in the raku firing. Your pieces will be ready to take home after the second session.

Raku firing involves glazing your bisqueware and then placing it in an outside kiln. The kiln is then fired by propane gas up to 1000 degrees. The kiln is then opened at this temperature and the pieces are removed an immediately put into a bin with combustable material such as sawdust or shredded paper and starved of oxygen. After reduction has taken place the pieces are cooled and then washed to reveal an exciting array of crackles, colours and metalllic glows.

I will talk you through the best shapes to make to ensure a successful firing and help you make your pieces.

Raku ware is not food safe and cannot be dishwasher proof nor is it reliably waterproof so please note that fact when choosing your designs.

The cost of the two sessions is £100 plus booking fees.  The first session is £30 and the firing session is £70. The firing session will be dependant on the weather and if it is raining heavily we will be unable to fire. If this happens I will offer an alternative date to fire. You will need to bring a packed lunch for the firing session and please note the timings of each session.

I have three dogs who will be around and who I mention in case of allergies. There is no parking at my house in Gold Street but Waitrose car park is behind our house.
